JAG Rugby is the official charity of this year's Cape Town Tens rugby tournament. Get down to Hamilton’s Rugby Club on the 5th, 6th and 7th February to support the Tens and JAG Rugby.

Cape Town Tens is a unique ten-man rugby tournament which combines the best aspects of Sevens and 15-man rugby. The tournament was launched in Cape Town by former Springboks Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck in February 2009.

The South African Rugby Legends (SARL) will be facilitating a rugby clinic for 100 of our under 9 boys at Cape Town Tens from 4.30pm on Friday the 5th of February. Our boys are looking forward to it!

JAG Rugby ran 16K for K4K

JAG Rugby boys supported the K4k (kids for kids) charity event on Saturday, 31 October, by running a 16km relay. K4K is an social responsibility campaign initiated Gray House, Bishops, which encourages Bishops boys and the broader community to become active and actively involved in raising funds for the benefit of charity.

Entrants of all ages were encouraged to participate in either the 4x4km relay race or the 4km fun walk. Our JAG Rugby boys ran the 4x4km (16km in total) relay and had a great time. Here are some photos from the day.

This year the Bishop boys elected to support two charities: CASE, an NGO that seeks to break the cycle of crime and violence through training and personal development programmes for men, women and youths in areas with high crime rates, and the Chaeli Campaign which is believed to be the only non-profit organisation in South Africa founded by children. Their main objective is to mobilise the minds and bodies of children with disabilities.

JAG Foundation, in conjunction with the SA Rugby Legends Association, launched the recently completed Legacy Park on Tuesday, 20 October. The park is a 60m x 40m synthetic grass pitch which allows for a number of modified sports to be played including touch rugby.

The launch was followed by a coaching clinic at with Springbok Coach Peter de Villiers and Springbok selector Ian McIntosh.

Blog Format Wobble

If you are wondering why our blog suddenly looks like it's a mess, it's because it is.

I hit a blog wobble while editing a post and although the blog template looks 'A-OK' on the back-up administrator side, from the viewer's perceptive it's a disaster! The side panel navigation panel, follow/fan links and logos have all dropped to the very bottom of the blog. Nothing will move them back as yet. The same thing happened to my personal blog not too long ago and I had to spend hours trying to find a template which enabled the blog functionality I liked and looked as close to the original template as possible.

Enough geek-like speak. I am working on the problem and hope to have things back to normal (or as close to normal) as soon as possible. Please don't be surprised if the the format keeps changing, it's just me trying to fix it.

It is a dream of many South African boys to one day play for the Springboks. Our JAG Rugby team had the honour of running out the famous Newlands stadium tunnel and on to the field. What an unforgettable moment for our young players!

Nothing keeps JAG Rugby players down. After the weekend's losses it is a good thing the players know that it is not whether they win or lose the game but how they played it.

“Regretfully it was a bad day 'at the office' for the JAG Rugby high school teams on Saturday morning , we lost to a well drilled Bergvliet High School team,” said Barry Clarke, manager of JAG Rugby, “Despite this, our teams held their heads high and thoroughly enjoyed the game of rugby.”

The under 15 team had their first loss of the season but were undeterred and still in high spirits after the game.

The JAG Rugby primary school games were supposed to be played last Thursday but due to the religious holiday, Ascension Day, some of these fixtures did not take place.

Tuesday, May 5 the JAG Rugby under 15 team convincingly beat Norman Henshilwood with a score of 25-12. Everyone at JAG Rugby is excited about our first big victory of the season. It is going to be a great year for our players.

Weekend Results at Reddam House

On Saturday, April 25, JAG Rugby junior teams played their first games of the season against Reddam House on the school’s fields in Constantia.

The under nine team lost narrowly, the under 11 team were outplayed and the under 13 B team had succumbed to a well drilled Reddam team. The under 13 A team drew five all.

“Even though there were no wins, our players put in their all and more importantly, learnt from the experience,” said Barry Clarke head of JAG Rugby.

It my pleasure to write to you as we go into 2009. This year is a very exciting year for South Africa on the sporting front. We have the British and Irish Lions touring South Africa in June and July 2009. The last time that we played them you will recall that we lost 2 -1. It was won by Jeremy Guscott with drop goal in the dying minutes in the second test in Durban.

This year should be different as we have a strong squad that have spent many seasons together and they all understand each others strengths and weaknesses and they operate effectively as a team. This is our major strength.A key asset that all teams require is an understanding of each others strength’s and weaknesses. Once you all understand and enhance this concept of team work, you results will be better, both on and off the field. This was one of the key factors of the Proteas victory against the Australians in Australia. Each player knew their strengths and weaknesses and also that of their team members. The same is valid for the team talk that John Smit gave to his team at Twickenam in 2008.

Let us all embrace the ethos team work and respect for all our team mates. Enjoy the season and most all have fun.

Friday Field Fun - Tag Rugby

From February, 20, boys and girls of all ages are invited to play tag rugby every Friday on the rugby fields at Pinelands High School at 16:00. All children and teenagers are welcome and there is no fee to join in the fun!

JAG Rugby is a rugby development initiative committed to providing disadvantaged youth a sense of achievement through sport and engendering a culture of dignity.

The programme goes far beyond sports developments, assisting the children adapt healthy balanced lifestyles, encouraging them to excel in their school careers all while developing strong interpersonal life skills.

JAG Rugby practice at various times during the week at either Pinelands High School and in Bonteheuwel. Rugby players between the ages of 7-9 years old play mini-rugby and those between the ages of 10 -19 years old play full rugby, with varying rules from junior to senior teams.
